The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug (historical name Yugra) was founded in December, 10, 1930, by Decree of the All-Russia Central Executive Committee as the Ostyako-Vogulsky National Okrug with the centre in the settlement of Samarovo. Six Districts Beryezovsky, Kondinsky, Laryaksky, Samarovsky, Surgutsky, Shurykshkarsky formed the Ostyako-Vogulsky National Okrug. By Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR, dated October 23, 1940, the Ostyako-Vogulsky National Okrug was renamed into the Khanty-Mansiysky National Okrug. On August 14, 1944 it joined to the re-organized Tyumen region.
The city of Khanty-Mansiysk is situated in the picturesque surroundings of the West-Siberian plain at the foot of steep mountains on the right bank of the Irtysh River covered with ancient cedar (with a thick cedar forest growing on them), at a distance of 20 km from the place of the junction of two great rivers - the Ob and Irtysh.
The city is located at a distance of 930 km from Tyumen and 2900 km from the Capital of Russia – Moscow.
The total area of the city is 33776 he, which includes 11952 he occupied by forests and bushes, 12 he occupied by parks and squares, and 1545 he occupied by dwelling houses and industrial objects.
The total length of the streets, passages and quays is 119.7 km, including 89.6 km, covered with improved modern pavement.
As of October 1, 2006, the number of resident population was 62 347 people.
There are kindergartens and nurseries, 15 - institutions of general educational (schools, gymnasiums), 8 institutions of additional education (children centers, centers of children creativity, training centers, Sunday schools, etc.), 6 technical institutions (colleges, technical schools), and 12 higher educational institutions (universities and their branches) in Khanty-Mansiysk.
There are 5 museums, 5 public libraries, 5 culture and leisure institutions, among which a Theatre & Concert Complex; Center of Arts for gifted children of the North; Sport & Cultural Center "Druzhba" ("Friendship"), 5 specialized gymnasiums, one dance pavilion, and one pool; Ice Palace that can seat 2000 people; a stadium for track and field athletics for 5000 people; bowling-center; billiard clubs, 2 specialized ski-stadiums, one stadium intended for conducting biathlon championships and training on a level with the highest world standards; sports grounds, sports & training gyms; shooting galleries; hockey stadiums, health-improving saunas, 2 slopes for mountain skiing, one of which is for snowboard, and another one is for tubing.
At present Khanty-Mansiysk is developing not only as a center of oil producing region but rather as a center of business activity, sport and national culture. Now, Khanty-Mansiysk is proud of its Center for Gifted Children of the North - one the best in Russia; its original Biathlon Center which meets the highest world standards; its airport which has a landing strip for airplanes of different types and the newest modern facilities; its telephone and telecommunication companies enabling the connection to almost every spot on the globe; its Center of Rehabilitation and District Clinical Hospital equipped with up-to-date equipment for treatment and diagnostics; its modern banks and financial companies, hundreds of square meters of modern dwelling houses, its Museums and Culture Centers. It is only a short list of the objects that have been recently built or are under construction now due to which the city is rapidly changing its image. The peculiarity and individuality of modern architecture of Khanty-Mansiysk in combination with unique ancient nature around attracts hundreds of visitors and tourist to our town every year.
16 hotels are available for the visitors of the city. Most of the hotels provide a long range of services for the people who stay there. Restaurants, bars, training gyms, billiard rooms and saunas are at the disposal of the guests.
In the course of the recent years lots of new monuments have been erected in Khanty-Mansiysk. Memorable sign devoted to first explorers of Yugra-Land is situated on the hill in Samarovo. Monument to the first explorers of Yugra-Land is situated on the square in front of the Museum of Oil & Gas. It was opened on the 50th anniversary of the opening of Western Siberian oil-and-gas province. Construction “The Fire of the Sport Glory” was opened when the Biathlon Championship was being held in Khanty-Mansiysk. Sculpture “Assol Korabelnaya” is situated on the square near the River Station. Assol is a heroine of A. Grin’s novel "Scarlett Sails", who waited the ship with scarlet sails from her dreams. Sculpture “Golden tambourine” is situated at the intersection of Engels and Mira Street. This sculpture was named after the Cinema Festival “Golden tambourine” and represents the symbol of this festival.
You should definitely visit Christ Resurrection Church. It is a group of churches built in accordance with Russian architectural traditions of 1830-s - 1890-s.
