Atonement the opera
Atonement, Ian McEwan’s novel of love thwarted by class, war and a tragic misunderstanding, is to become an opera. The author and two of his friends have begun work on an adaptation that they hope will transfer the success of his 2001 bestseller and the Oscar-winning film to the stage. McEwan said that he finally agreed to the project “several weeks ago” having agonised for a month over whether to tackle the libretto himself, informs Times. He opted not to but will help to shape the adaptation before handing over to the poet and critic Craig Raine to write the words. The composer Michael Berkeley, who presents the long-running Radio 3 show Private Passions, will write the music.
