Rostov Veliky located on lake Nero is one of the oldest cities in Russia, known from the 862 year. During the period of the formation of the ancient state, Rostovgro was the capital of the vast princedom, a major political,  economic and spiritual center of Northeast Russia. In the XIII century, the development of Rostov was interrupted by the Tatar-Mongolian invasion; the city was captured and ruined.
For many centuries, Rostov Veliky retained the importance of religious center. The main cathedral of Rostov - Assumption is the first Christian temple in the north-east Russia, the oldest and greatest shrine of Yaroslavl diocese. The temple was rebuilt four times, and the current building of the cathedral will soon be 500 years old. Almost all the ruling  bishops of Rostov-Yaroslavl from the XI to XVIII Century repose on its walls. The cathedral is famous for its one-pood thousand bells. It is compositionally related to the walls and towers of the Rostov Kremlin. Together with trading rows and the Church of Our Saviour at the Auction of the Uspensky Cathedral is one of the urban ensemble. The Church of Our Saviour at the Outer entrance hall (1672-1680) occupies a special place among the many buildings of Kremlin. Not far from the Kremlin is the church of the Blessed Isidore of 1566.
Rostov Kremlin is among the "particularly valuable objects of historical and cultural heritage of the peoples of Russia" and is a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The State culture preserve "Rostov kremlin" was founded in 1883 as a museum of church antiquities. Currently, inspections are being proposed for the Kremlin temples with the wall paintings of 1670-80 years, a set of administrative, residential and  business buildings wall and tower, the exhibition of ancient Russian art XII-XVII centuries, Russian painting XVIII-early XX century, Rostov enamel, public funds of the potter's ceramics, Russian and foreign porcelain, earthenware, glass and bone.
The famous Rostov bells will be interesting to travellers. The mighty four-arch belfry was built in 1682-1687. Fifteen bells are placed in a row. The biggest - Sysoy - weighs more than 32 tons.
In a half kilometer from Rostov in the Bogoslav village on the Ishne river is located a wooden church of John the Theologian XVII century. At the same distance from the city center is Varnitsky Monastery - the birthplace of Sergei Radonezh, "the great sympathizer of the land of Russia". Avramiev monastery is located at th  e former outskirts of the town, in the southwest - Yakovlevsky monastery, with the original architecture. Next to it near the lake is located one of the three coastal cities.
The old city is located in the central part around the Kremlin and confined by the Okruzhnaya street. From the water opens a beautiful view of the entire city, the Kremlin dome and monasteries amazing with their magnificence. The shooting of that part of the film "Ivan Vasilievich changes his profession", where oprichniks chased after the "demons" was exactly carried out in Rostov Veliky in the Kremlin.
Today, Rostov is the district center of Yaroslavl Oblast. The distance from Rostov to Yaroslavl is 53 kilometres, to Moscow - 202km. The population of the city is about 36 thousand people, in the district it is almost 75 thousand. Rostov is a well-known center of tourism, one of the pearls of Golden Ring, combining the oldest cities in Russia. At the factory "Rostov enamel" craftsmen make jewellery that are famous throughout Russia.
