City’s name Stavropol consists of two Greek words ‘stavros’ and ‘polis’ and is interpreted as ‘city of the cross’.
Stavropol’s climate
Stavropol is a Southern city and is famous for its strong winds. The windiest months are February and March. Continental climate prevails during the year. It causes fine, warm, mainly clear weather in summer and fine frosty weather in winter.
Spring in Stavropol begins in the end of March and lasts for 50 days. From the beginning it’s ‘spring of light’, then it’s ‘spring of water’ in bickering of streams that say about snow melting, and finally ‘green spring’ comes that decorates the city with tender laces of leaf and silk of herbs. Summer lasts for 120 days, average temperature during 61 days is 20 degrees Celsius. Absolute maximum reached 37 degrees. The signal of beginning of these warm days is flourishing of lilac in the city and of brier in the forests.
Autumn starts in the beginning of October, average daily temperature not higher than 10 degrees. Winter weather is variable: sometimes it can be warm as it is spring and suddenly during one night it can be placed by severe winter.
Modern city
Stavropol has a theater and a football team called Dynamo Stavropol. The main educational institutions of the town are: Stavropol State University, North-Caucasus State Technical University, Agrarian University and Stavropol State Medical Academy.
The area of Russia in which Stavropol resides is very mountainous, placing the city in the midst of the northern Caucasus mountain range. The city has one of the biggest and best city parks in Russia.
Stavropol's economy focuses on the production of automobiles, furniture, and construction equipment and materials. The city relies on air transport (Shpakovskoye airport), rail, and highway connections to other Russian cities.
Central Park – Park ‘Centralniy’
The green pearl of the city of Stavropol is Central Park or Park ‘Centralniy’ – natural landmark guarded by the Government. It’s more than 150 years old. It’s located in the downtown and occupies about 12 hectares.
The Park’s history is reminiscent of the city’s history and the whole history of that time. They believe that Great Russian writers Pushkin, Lermontov, Griboedov used to walk under the roof of foliage of this park.
Unique lanes of marvelous chestnuts, grown with using of uncommon techniques; flower compositions: vases with flowers, flower fountain, flowerbeds ‘Airship’ and ‘Airplane’ made in honor of the first flights by human.
Flowerbeds ‘The Varangian’ and ‘The Korean’ are sacrificed to heroes of Russian-Japanese war; elegant greeneries and grots, decorative pounds – all these attract visitors and makes the Park the favorite resting place of Stavropol’s citizens.
Nowadays they do everything in Central Park to preserve its historical value as a natural landmark, to create best conditions for calm rest of visitors and to provide wide range of services according to traditions. |
