Voronezh is a big city in Russia that counts more than 400 years history. Initially arisen as a wooden fortress, today it is the large cultural and economic centre with the population over one million person. Voronezh often called The capital of Central - Black Earth region.

 

The rank of the “Historical city of Russia” was appropriated to Voronezh. Today under government protection more than three hundred monuments constructed in different centuries. Among sights of a city it is possible to emphasize: the Belltower of Akatova’s monastery (1620), Uspensky church (1694-1702), Nikolsky church (1720), the Voronezh palace (18 century, baroque), the Arsenal (1696).

 

The rank «The City of military glory» was appropriated to Voronezh for heroic resistance to German aggressors in days of Second World War.

 

Voronezh is located in a temperate climate zone, in winter it's frosty, with a steady snow cover, with often thaws, in summer it’s warm. There are many equipped beaches on the river Voronezh and Don.

 

In 1600 nearby to a fortress the Uspensky monastery has been based. The main temple of a monastery - the Uspensky cathedral was erected much earlier. Religious development of Voronezh begins with this moment.

 

At the very end of the seventeenth century Voronezh becomes not only the military and trade centre, it should become "a cradle of the Russian fleet".

 

In the late seventies of the eighteenth century Voronezh gets the new status. The city becomes the centre of Voronezh’s governors activity . In 1781 first Voronezh arms made with the image of a jug and water flowing from it. In a city new office buildings have been appearing, according to assignment of the new status. In 1785 the National school has been based, in the same building the first printing house was based at the initiative of E.Bolhovitinov.

 

In 18 century the seminary where many people who obtained the All-Russia recognition were graduating, has been established. New educational institutions have been based, the first library appeared and also professional theatre. In 1845 the Mihajlovsky military school opens, this educational institution became the most popular and large.

 

In 1913 in Voronezh the first institute of a name of Peter the Great has been opened. At agricultural institute great Russian scientists, such as K.D.Glinka, A.V.Dumansky, B.M.Kozo-Polyansky graduated. I.S.Nikitin who had a book-store, based library. Among well-known Voronezh citizens it is possible to distinguish I.A.Bunin, S.J.Marshak and others.

 

Numerous museums (Museum of local lore, a museum "Diorama", I.N.Kramsky's Art museum, etc.), theatres (Dramatic theatre of a name of A.Koltsov, Chamber theatre, Young people's theatre, etc.), cinemas, clubs are always ready to make leisure of the tourist fascinating.
