Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is a chief town on Sakhalin Island, in Far East Russia.

 

Once all Susunajsky plain was covered by a thick ancient taiga. Only the narrow road constructed by convicts connected Korsakov with Vladimirovka. Flora around the city is various and rich. More than 100 kinds of trees, bushes and ligneous lianas.

 

There were few green plantings in the city with an exception of prospekt Stalina.
In 1945-50th years asphalt was only in Lenina, Stalina, Torgovaya and Sakhalinskaya streets.

 

Since the late 50-ies the view of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk began to change. In 1956-57 concrete production factories and workshops began to function. In 1962 in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk the first factory of large-panel house construction started. Since that moment wooden houses were considerably pressed.

 

In the late fifties and in 60th years in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk there were very many objects of industrial, social and cultural value. These are cinema theatres "Komsomolets", "Sputnik", "Ecran", "Oktyabr'"; department store "Sakhalin"; shops "Rassvet", "Ryabinka", "Yuzhnyy", "Zhemchuzhina", "Start", "Berezka", "Ruslan"; trading-household markets "Vostok" and "Novinka".

According to All-Union population census, January, 1989, in territory of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk lived 167.000 persons.
The view of the city changed for the last years. The city grew prettier, many bright, aesthetically designed buildings appeared here.

 

International contacts of the island capital grow with every year. The favourable geographical position and the growing economic potential make the city one of the key centres of the international integration in Asian-Pacific region.  Businessmen from Japan, South Korea and the USA work here for a long time and successfully, partner relations with businessmen of Canada, Germany, Singapore, India, Australia are adjusted.
In the end of 1997 the branch of Consulate general of Japan was opened in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, here work diplomatic representatives of Hokkaido, the State of Alaska.
