Zheleznovodsk is a town in Stavropol Krai, Russia. The name translates as Iron Waters as the mineral waters springing from the earth in Zheleznovodsk were believed to have high content of iron.
Zheleznovodsk, along with Pyatigorsk, Yessentuki, Kislovodsk, and Mineralnye Vody, is a part of the Caucasus Mineral Waters, a renowned Russian spa resort. Zheleznovodsk is considered as the cleanest town of the Caucasus Mineral Waters.
Zheleznovodsk is situated in the saddle between Mounts Beshtau and Zheleznaya, in what the locals refer to as airo-dynamic tube, which attracts strong winds in the winter.
It’s a town of exceptional and mesmerizing natural beauty. The walks in the Lechebny Park (Healing park) on the picturesque slopes of Mount Zheleznaya and Mount Razvalka are unforgettable.
Mineral waters springing
Mineral waters springing are the main healing sources of this spa resort. There are more than 20 springs. The water is being used not only for drinking but also for baths, inhalations and water treatment. There are different sources of the water but they mix and are of the same structure.
One of the peculiarity of Zheleznovodsk waters is their temperature. High temperature usualy is not a feature of calcium water but Zheleznovodsk is an exception. This is the only spa resort in our country where calcium water is very warm.

Sulphide mud from the Tambukan Lake has been being used here since 1866. It’s like a black plastic oily mass; color depends on content of iron sulphide.
Medical power of the mud is stronger with stuff like biogenic stimulators, black molds fungus and others that have antibacterial action.
Mud contains iron, iodine, zinc, copper and silver.
Cultural meaning
In 1841, Mikhail Lermontov, famous Russian poet, spent the last day of his life in Zheleznovodsk, from where he departed to his fatal duel on the slopes of Mount Mashuk in Pyatigorsk. Over the past several years Zheleznovodsk has become the site of the International Hot Air Balloon Festival.
In June of 2008 the Mashuk-Akva Term spa in Zheleznovodsk unveiled a large monument to the enema (an 800-lb. brass syringe bulb held aloft by three angels). "Let's beat constipation," read one banner. Said the sculptor, "This device is eternal; it will never change".
